SouthEast Aside was started in the 1980s by a  group of North Carolina horsewomen who wanted to promote sidesaddle riding.  Several of the original members are still active within the group.

In 2008, SEA became one of the original founding regional groups that make up the American Sidesaddle Association.     Paid members or SEA also have full membership in ASA, and access to the ASA boards and newsletter.
