Who we are
Hundred Oaks was formed in 1975, when the owner couldn't find a sidesaddle for use in the U.S. Bicentennial to fit her horse. As with many new aside riders, Marti started buying saddles to try out. Soon there was a surplus that had to be sold... to buy more saddles of course!
Marti met Jack Steele, the late patriarch of the Steele Saddle Tree Company, and Jack produced a sidesaddle tree. Sadly that tree didn't fit either, but Jack's son Wayne was home from the sea, and Wayne started tinkering with the design. The result was that in 1983 Wayne introduced the prototype Steele sidesaddle. The design was a huge success, and as they say, the rest is history.
In 1980 Marti formed SouthEastAside with a few friends. The group still exists and can be accessed by clicking here : SouthEast Aside. The same year, Marti joined the then - fledgling Mid West Side Saddle Association (MWSSA) which had formed in Ohio to meet the needs of local riders. MWSSA grew and later became the World Sidesaddle Federation, Inc. (WSFI). Along the way she held several officer positions within the group, including that of Vice President. She was certified as a sidesaddle instructor in 1985. In 1993 she and Linda Bowlby produced the book "The Sidesaddle Legacy" in response to the needs of a widely separated audience seeking help with sidesaddle. The group continued for the next 25 years and merged with the International Side Saddle Organization (ISSO) in 2005. Marti served on the Board of Directors of ISSO before helping to form the American Sidesaddle Association (ASA) on which she now serves as Vice President and Membership Chair.
